Start Smart -- Take it Slow, Let it Grow

I

t's not called a get-rich-quick "scheme" for nothing. (Notice
how much "scheme" and "scam" sound alike?)

It's true, once you decide to start your own part time business,
the floodgates of MLM's, franchise opportunities, and "I went
from broke to a million in net worth" ads open up at you. Can it
be real? Can you be making $10,000 per month within half a year?

Well, it happened once or twice, so, it might happen again. But
if that's the way you want to go, you've got a better chance
rolling dice in Vegas.

But, if you really want the American dream of owning your own
business, then do it right, learn the rules, and play by the
rules. Don't expect "easy money," there ain't no such animal.
Don't expect to retire to the islands next summer. Instead,
follow some simple rules:

First: Choose wisely. Love pizza? Buy a pizza franchise. Love
fixing rock chips in windshields? Buy a rock chip repair
franchise. It'll be your business, you have to do the work.

Choose something you want to do for 40 hours every week for the
next 25 years! Choose something you use and believe it that has
selling power!!!

Second: Start part time. It takes time to get the word out and
build a steady clientele. You have expenses to pay (like the
mortgage!). A steady income gives you a cushion and peace of
mind. Says my partner, Dr. Nunley, "I started my business in a
spare bedroom while working a day job in radio. The experience
later helped my business."

Third: Don't overstock. The scam artists will tell you that you
need a warehouse full of product. Truth is, you do need some
inventory. It'll depend on how much time you're going to spend,
how much experience you have, and how much the inventory costs.
Juggle some numbers, think carefully, buy what you need, sell it,
then buy more.

Last: Review before committing. Makes sure it's a product that
really works for you. Make sure you know the refund or exchange
policy. Get everything in writing.

Remember, your business is your baby -- you'll have to deal with
the dirty diapers as well as the adorable smiles.
