TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS: Making a Name for Yourself Through
Self-Publishing
by Chris Bradley
If you're trying to make a name for yourself on the Internet or
anywhere else, you need to get your name out there and establish
yourself as an expert in your field. Now, this is no secret to
most of us, but unfortunately, it's much easier said than done.
We've all tried our hands at writing articles and putting them up
on web sites to establish a presence. While these things can be
very effective, they simply will never hold the credibility of a
published, tangible publication.
If you've ever sent any kind of manuscript off to a publisher and
waited weeks or months for a response, only to get a rejection
letter, you know how competitive the writing field is, and how
hard it can be to get noticed. Because of this, many writers and
business people have decided to try self-publishing, and with
great success.
Now, if you've already been writing these articles I mentioned
earlier, why not compile them into a book? Sort them according
to subject to create chapters, and either publish them as a book
of articles, or, if you want to work a little harder, edit them
so that they flow like a book. It really isn't that difficult,
and it can really help create some notariety.
There are a lot of services on the 'Net and elsewhere that can
print and bind your book for you, no matter the size or quantity.
Once "published," you can take your book local stores and ask to
place them near the counter. If that doesn't work, sell them
online or even on street corners.
If you decide to try self-publishing, start small. Begin by
ordering 25-100 copies of your book and see how it goes. After
all, if you order 5,000 and don't sell them all, you've just
wasted a lot of money.
Self-publishing allows you to retain all rights to your material,
and when you run out of books, you can simply order more. You're
free to decide your own asking price, and you'll save money on
the printing and distribution. Best of all, you'll make a name
for yourself in a tangible, credible way.
